šŸ¤Æ I Tested 7 Trending AI Image Generators - the Winner...

The Winner of Todayā€™s AI Image Generators Experiment is....

Hey Genesis Residents!

Itā€™s no secret that the internet is buzzing with a heated debate:

Which AI image generator reigns supreme?

With the growing use of AI tools for art, content creation, and marketing, picking the best one has become a major topic of discussion.

I decided to settle this debate by testing seven of the most popular AI image generators on the market right now.

So, after giving each of these tools the same challenging prompts, I was left with some impressive, surprising, and downright shocking results.

Let's get into it...

LETā€™S GET STARTED

SETTING THE STAGE
 šŸŽØ The AI Contenders

I chose the following seven AI image generators for this test:

  1. Midjourney

  2. DALL-E

  3. Ideogram

  4. Freepik Mystic

  5. Flux (using Grok)

  6. Leonardo Phoenix

  7. Haiper

These tools have gained recognition in the world of AI art, but each has its strengths and weaknesses, particularly when it comes to handling complex, multi-faceted prompts.

While there are other notable tools such as Googleā€™s Imagen 3 and Metaā€™s Imagine AI, they were excluded due to limited global availability.

PROMPT ONE
šŸ‘©šŸ» The Young Woman

Prompt Used šŸ‘‡šŸ»

An ultra-realistic smartphone selfie of a young woman in her mid-20s. The photo has the characteristic sharpness and vivid color of a high-end smartphone camera, with slight motion blur on one edge. The image is taken in natural daylight, causing mild overexposure on one side of her face. She has shoulder-length curly hair with grown-out highlights, and wears minimal, everyday makeup with slightly smudged eyeliner. Her expression is a genuine, slightly lopsided smile with a hint of tiredness around her eyes. A thin silver necklace is partially tangled in her hair near her collar. The background is a lived-in studio apartment, with a unmade bed and a small bookshelf visible. A houseplant with a few yellowing leaves sits on a windowsill behind her. There's a small coffee stain barely visible on the collar of her shirt.

In this test, I wanted to see which AI generator could best capture the essence of a realistic photograph, from the texture of the skin to the lived-in look of the womanā€™s environment.

Letā€™s break down the results:

Midjourney

Midjourney has a reputation for stunning visuals, its default settings tend to over-perfect images.

In this case, it rendered a beautiful image but missed some of the promptā€™s imperfections, such as the slightly smudged eyeliner and messy apartment.

DALL-E

DALL-E struggled the most here, producing an image where the woman looked more like a character from a BRATZ doll collection rather than a realistic person.

The overly smooth features didnā€™t align with the promptā€™s intent.

Ideogram

This was a standout performer. Ideogram embraced the promptā€™s imperfections, such as the slightly blurred motion and natural lighting.

It gave the most realistic depiction of the woman, although the motion blur was a bit overdone.

Freepik Mystic

The lighting in Mysticā€™s image was impressive, and it rendered the womanā€™s face with a high degree of realism. However, it still veered a little too close to the uncanny valley with overly smooth skin textures.

Flux (Grok)

Flux produced a solid, believable image, but it didnā€™t quite follow the prompt as closely as Ideogram or Mystic.

Still, it had a natural feel that made it visually pleasing.

Leonardo Phoenix

Phoenix did a great job with prompt adherence, but the lighting felt slightly off, and the framing of the image was strange.

It was close to a real photo but not quite there.

Haiper

Haiper was strong but missed key lighting details, and the skin was overly perfect.

The overall feel was great, but it didnā€™t capture the realism we were looking for.

Winner: Ideogram šŸ†

Ideogram took the lead here with its attention to detail, imperfections, and natural rendering of the subject.

While some other tools produced beautiful images, Ideogramā€™s balance between realism and adherence to the prompt earned it the win.

PROMPT TWO
šŸŽØšŸ’‚šŸ» Victorian London

Prompt Used šŸ‘‡šŸ»

A bustling Victorian-era London street at twilight, with horse-drawn carriages moving through the cobblestone roads. A well-dressed woman in a crimson dress and bonnet is standing under a gas street lamp, reading a folded newspaper with the headline: 'New Inventions Change the World!'. The glow of the lamp casts a warm light on her face. Steam rises from a nearby street vendor's cart selling roasted chestnuts, while children in tattered clothes run playfully in the background. In the distance, the clock tower of Big Ben looms, half-covered in a misty fog.

This prompt tested the tools' ability to render a detailed, atmospheric scene, complete with intricate textures and lighting

Letā€™s see how the contenders fared:

Midjourney

Midjourney accurately captured the basics of the scene but struggled with the fog, rendering it as smoke instead.

DALL-E

DALL-E again leaned too far into a cartoonish style, making the scene feel more like a Victorian postcard than a realistic street scene.

Ideogram

Ideogram performed reasonably well, though the slightly cartoonish feel persisted. However, the woman and scene framing were solid, and it came close with the text rendering.

Freepik Mystic

Mystic was the best overall image in terms of realism, with beautifully rendered lighting and textures.

However, it faltered when it came to the text on the newspaper.

Flux (Grok)

Flux excelled at rendering the text accurately and produced a natural pose for the woman reading the newspaper.

However, the overall scene felt less atmospheric than the other models.

Leonardo Phoenix

Phoenix accurately captured the sceneā€™s framing and even the text on the newspaper but once again fell into a more cartoonish style.

Haiper

Haiperā€™s scene was the most immersive, with rich textures and lighting.

It didnā€™t attempt the text but nailed the Victorian aesthetic with stunning accuracy.

Winner: Flux (Grok) šŸ†

While it didnā€™t quite capture the overall atmosphere as well as Mystic or Haiper, Flux excelled in following the promptā€™s details, particularly with its natural rendering of the text.

Tweet of the Day

PROMPT THREE
šŸŽ© Penny Lane

Prompt Used šŸ‘‡šŸ»

A bustling 1960s London street scene on a rainy afternoon. The street is lined with iconic red double-decker buses, black cabs, and people holding colourful umbrellas. A Beatles-inspired band performs on a street corner, with their instruments reflecting in the wet pavement. In the background, Big Ben is visible through a light fog. A neon sign above a small cafƩ reads 'Penny Lane' in glowing letters. On the right, a woman in a stylish 1960s dress is waiting for the bus, holding a newspaper with the headline 'Man Walks on Moon.' Raindrops are visibly falling, creating ripples in puddles, and the whole scene has a blend of nostalgia and realism.

The third prompt was a nostalgic street scene from 1960s London, with text rendering a critical component.

Could the AI tools handle the complexity of the scene and accurately portray the text?

Midjourney

Midjourney rendered the scene well but struggled with the text, mixing up the requests for the cafĆ©ā€™s neon sign and the headline on the newspaper.

DALL-E

DALL-E fared poorly here, failing to accurately render the text and producing a cartoonish scene that didnā€™t fit the promptā€™s realistic tone.

Ideogram

Ideogram nailed this prompt, accurately placing the ā€œPenny Laneā€ sign and rendering a woman holding a newspaper with the correct headline.

While it wasnā€™t as atmospheric as Midjourney, the scene structure was on point.

Freepik Mystic

Mystic impressed with its visuals but faltered slightly with scene composition.

While it rendered the text well, the woman ended up standing awkwardly in the street.

Flux (Grok)

Flux was clever with how it handled the text, placing ā€œPenny Laneā€ on a billboard along with the Beatles reference. However, it suffered from odd scene composition, even producing two Big Bens!

Leonardo Phoenix

Phoenix followed the prompt well, including correct text placement, but the overall visual feel was too cartoonish for a realistic 1960s street scene.

Haiper

Haiper excelled in terms of visual quality and atmosphere, but it completely ignored the text elements of the prompt, which was a major drawback.

Winner: Ideogram  šŸ†

For the second time, Ideogram won out due to its ability to follow the prompt accurately, particularly with the text, while still producing a visually cohesive scene.

šŸ† Ultimate Winner: Ideogram

Across all three prompts, Ideogram emerged as the most consistent performer, excelling in prompt adherence and realistic rendering.

While other tools like Freepik Mystic and Haiper produced beautiful images, they occasionally missed critical details like text or scene composition.
